My Experience with the Outdoor Vitals Summit 0° Ultralight Sleeping Bag
During a big cold snap in the alpine, I took this sleeping bag on a backpacking trip up to 13,000 feet. It seemed like temperatures would be right around 5° overnight, so it seemed like the perfect test of the Summit 0° Ultralight Sleeping Bag's winter worthiness.
I was initially impressed by the weight of the Summit 0° and was also impressed by how small it compresses down. It didn't take up as much room in my backpack as I expected it to, which was awesome and allowed me to pack extra treats!
After trekking up a handful of miles, I unpacked camp, got my tent set up and pulled the Summit Sleeping Bag out of its stuff sack. It started lofting up right away and looked nice and fluffed by the time my sleeping pad was inflated.
In the evening when it was time to get cozy, I crawled into the Summit 0° Ultralight Down Sleeping Bag. It has a center zip, which is ideal in so many ways. It's nice for lounging in the tent, and I find that overall it's a warm and comfortable design choice. I zipped up and the draft collar immediately started locking in some much needed heat.
I slept well that night fully zipped up in the sleeping bag. I woke up to a glittery with ice tent, but condensation wasn't much of an issue. The DWR coated shell of the Summit 0° easily repelled what little moisture ended up getting on the footbox.
Over the duration of this trip I was impressed by the bag's warmth. It never got colder than zero outside, which takes the Summit 0° down to its rating. I felt pretty comfortable in that situation, although I don't think I would be comfortable using this sleeping bag in colder temperatures that that.
Later in the season I used the Outdoor Vitals Summit 0° Ultralight Sleeping Bag on a shorter backpacking trip in Utah. The temperatures were a bit less harsh, with nights varying between 2° to 14°. I was cozy each night and am glad this is the sleeping bag I brought. It's so lightweight and warm that backpacking with it over winter is a pleasure compared to much bulkier options which are more common!
If you're looking for a high quality winter sleeping bag that doesn't break the bank, is ultralight and compresses down super small, definitely check out the Summit 0° by Outdoor Vitals.
