Gear Review: UltaMid 4 Ultralight Pyramid Tent By Hyperlite Mountain Gear
If you do a lot of backpacking in the mountains, or adventure on rivers, the UltaMid 4 Ultralight Pyramid Tent By Hyperlite Mountain Gear might be perfect for you.

The UltaMid Series of tents by Hyperlite Mountain Gear are hands down some of the most popular tents on the market for serious adventurers. And for the past many years, I've been using my UltaMid 4 Ultralight Pyramid Tent all over the San Juan Mountains and beyond. While I'm not a part of the "Hyperlite cult", I do love a lot of their gear and this tent is one of the great items they make.

The UltaMid Ultralight Pyramid Tents are made with Dyneema, which is really nice for camping in extremes while keeping pack weight down. Dyneema is super water-resistant, so if you're caught in huge storms overnight there is no need to wait for the sun to dry out your tent in the morning- simply give the tent some good shakes to get the water off and it's dry! For those of us sensitive to sound, Dyneema tends to reduce the noises created by high winds, which is a feature quite unique to this fabric.

The versatility of the Ultamid 4 Ultralight Pyramid Tent cannot be understated. Due to it's simple design, and array of inserts to customize the overall experience, this tent works out awesome for backpacking, paddling, winter camps and bikepacking.

My Experience with the UltaMid 4 Ultralight Pyramid Tent By Hyperlite Mountain Gear

The UltaMid 4 is the tent me and my husband used for the Colorado Trail, Continental Divide Trail and most of the backpacking we've done over the last five years or so. We've used the full insert most often, but sometimes we use the half insert, and sometimes don't use any insert. I've also used this tent for solo adventures and when I do, the half insert is perfect.

Things I really love about the UltaMid 4 are the height of the tent, which allows me to stand up for getting dressed and such. It's also great for high wind events up in the alpine. While I would not choose this tent for the most extreme weather, it does great in almost all weather. The UltaMid 4 is spacious and comfortable to be in for long periods of time.

The UltaMid 4 Ultralight Pyramid Tent By Hyperlite Mountain Gear is super spacious, and can be used with multiple inserts to make it the perfect tent for your adventures. I personally love the full insert with floor. If I'm adventuring solo, I use the half insert for extra vestibule space.

This tent has a very minimal design and look, something Hyperlite Mountain Gear is known for. And while it doesn't have many bells and whistles, it is exceptional where quality is concerned. The only issue we've ever experienced with the UltaMid 4 Ultralight Pyramid Tent was a broken zipper. This was not a complete failure, and we were able to repair it at home between trips.

While the UltaMid tents can be pitched with pretty much anything as a pole, I like the carbon fiber pole that Hyperlite sells separately. That's a personal preference. Many folks pitch this tent with a trekking pole or a paddle.

During this trip winds were whipping almost non-stop at 30MPH, with gusts hitting an aggressive 70MPH often. The UltaMid 4 Ultralight Pyramid Tent didn't even make noise during these big winds.

The one thing that can get kind of tricky with the UltaMid 4 Pyramid Tent is how large its footprint is. This is not a small tent. Its phenomenal spaciousness comes at a cost and that cost is ground space. So once in a while it is hard to find a place to pitch it. Between the footprint, height and guy lines, you need to find a relatively open place to camp, and to get a solid pitch, flat ground is necessary. In some landscapes, this might just be too much tent.

A perfect tent peak to match the glorious mountain peaks.

All in all, the UltaMid 4 by Hyperlite Mountain Gear is one of my top picks for a backpacking tent. It's durable and very reliable. I appreciate that it sheds moisture and is highly versatile. It's also awesome to be able to stand up inside the tent to change clothing and to do some stretching if storms have you cooped up for a long time.

If you're looking for a tent that can handle any adventure, that is ultralight, and can be pitched with ease in every terrain, then you probably will love this one. If a 4-person tent seems a bit much, be sure to check out the UltaMid 1 or UltaMid 2!
