My Experience with the Wy'east Daypack By Six Moon Designs
To test out the Wy'east Daypack by Six Moon Designs, I loaded it up with 3 liters of water, some basic day hiking gear and my mirrorless camera. All in all about 15 pounds worth of essentials and camera stuff. The hydration sleeve and port were not finicky at all, which is something I appreciate in a backpack.
I started hiking and pretty quickly was gaining a lot of elevation on pretty chunky talus. This is the type of terrain where you learn real quick how comfortable a backpack is. I was happy to learn that the EVA back panel, rather wide shoulder straps and Wing Belt kept the backpack secure to my body. It moved with me and didn't cause any discomfort or hot spots.
The sternum strap on the Wy'east has a nice range. This is something I look for in backpacks, as I often times find them uncomfortable. That is not the case here. Six Moon Designs can be a little bit wonky with the height of their shoulder strap pockets, at least for my build, and I found them to be a little bit high. Still useable for sure, but not perfect.
I like the Wing Belt quite a lot. The pockets are spacious and overall it's comfortable on the hips and easy to adjust.
After about 10 miles of hiking on varied terrain, I was happy with how this backpack carried my gear and how comfortable the fit is. I didn't have to adjust it much as the miles ticked by. I also need to shout out the durability of the Wy'east because the Cat's Claw on this hike was no joke! There were a handful of stretches that felt more like bushwhacking through needles than following a cleared trail and the backpack didn't have any issues with tears or snagging.
The second hike I brought the Wy'east Daypack on was a pretty strenuous adventure through the gypsum dunes of White Sands National Park. This was a much more casual hike, but as anyone who's trekked through sand will tell you, the going can be very brutal! Once again I found that the Wy'east Daypack was exceptionally comfortable. It moves with the body in a nice, unobtrusive way and is just big enough to carry everything you'd need for a full day of exploring.
I can certainly see this backpack being used for general travel. Think road trips and flying for adventure. It has a streamlined design that is super durable and has no wasted space. The lid of this backpack isn't removable and it's pretty simple. But it has a nice pocket that is perfect for keys, cards and things like chapstick.
Be sure to check out this backpack if you're looking for a versatile and durable daypack. It's not fancy, and it's not the most ultralight backpack available. But it is a fantastic pack that balances out the things hikers look for and the things everyone looks for in a travel pack.
