Recently, Southwest Hikes had the opportunity to chat with Fjällräven's Research and Development Team about how they create innovative adventure clothing tailored for women.
Many women know the struggle of finding the perfect hiking pants and adventure clothing. The sizing can be wonky, the fits can be frustrating and of course, us women all have unique body shapes that make finding great outdoor clothing a challenge! Yet somehow it seems Fjällräven is really hitting the mark when it comes to really great women's adventure clothes.

How does Fjällräven ensure the fit of women’s clothing accommodates a range of body types while maintaining functionality?
At Fjällräven we strive to deliver the best fit in the outdoor industry. Our mission is to create garments that allow people to spend as much time in nature as possible. In order to achieve this, our garments need to be not only long lasting, functional, and durable but also highly comfortable. Fit and materials are key factors in delivering comfort especially on women’s garments.
Are there any differences in the materials or construction of women’s clothing compared to men’s to better suit female adventurers?
As women’s bodies can differ to a great degree, our products are designed accordingly. We offer both a Regular and Curved fit in our trouser collection. We use mapping of materials on strategic areas of products to give extra flexibility our durability to certain areas of the body. We use details such as flexible waistbands to allow our products to flex to your body shape and we also design so our garments can easily be adjusted at home or at our in-store repair centers.
To ensure our fits we use data driven decisions. Our body sizes are based on body scans from the general population. Giving us a fit that is accurate and representative of people today. We also use 3D software during product development to see the fit of a garment before sending to our suppliers. We simulate these garments in motion to ensure the most functional garment.
What sets Fjällräven women’s clothing apart in rugged or extreme environments, like alpine settings or desert climates?
During the development of a product our team always focuses on the activity. What will it be used for? What are the conditions? What materials will be best for this? what fit is required? What other garments is it designed to be used together with? How much ease of movement should the garment have? What functional details are required?
What feedback from customers about women’s clothing has been the most surprising or inspiring to your design team?
Most of the feedback we get is regarding materials and fit. Products can fit the female body differently even if the users are the same “size.” And the user preference for fit and aesthetics is as varied as different body types. We take a lot of inspiration from this and test our gear on as many different people as possible.
Do you see any trends or gaps in women’s outdoor clothing that you’re excited to address in future collections?
For us at Fjällräven, we’re excited about developing our products and fits even further to allow even more people to get out into nature. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, we want to make products that can help everyone to get out into nature and create a lifetime of outdoor memories.
